Hello, my name is Jacob Pizaña, and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor. My background is extensive and focused on patient care. My experience in patient care began in 1995 as a Navy Corpsman. While in the Navy, I worked with Marines, aboard ships, and in hospitals and clinics. I even received the Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal for saving two sailors’ lives. My career switched to healthcare IT when I returned home to Brownsville, Texas and transitioned again when I received my Master of Education in Counseling and Guidance from the University of Texas – Rio Grande Valley in 2016. As the President-elect of the Counseling and Guidance Student Association for 2015-2016, I helped would-be counselors obtain necessary internship hours and generate funds for the organization.
My counseling experience includes counseling children for the Office of Refugee and Resettlement, working with veterans for the Department of Veterans Affairs, and working with the community in crisis centers, hospitals, and community health clinics.
I focus on trauma - Depression, anxiety, nightmares, and anger (among other symptoms) are usually manifestations of Posttraumatic Stress (PTS) and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). As a veteran with a history of PTSD, I have learned through experience and education how to manage symptoms caused by trauma, domestic violence, and sexual assault. I am a Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) practitioner, and I am working to become a Certified Clinical Trauma Specialist.
